Banwasi Vikas Ashram also provides technical assistance for the Participatory Learning Action (PLA) approach, which aims to foster self-help strategies within underprivileged communities through a lifecycle approach. This begins with addressing their immediate concerns and progresses to developing an embedded system that empowers the local community to undertake development initiatives independently. BVA facilitates efforts to reduce social exclusion, malnutrition, and anemia in the operational areas by working closely with self-help groups (SHGs), youth clubs, villagers, and relevant systems. Banwasi Vikas Ashram’s activities began with the Chatra land movement, during which the founders and their associates mobilized the Mushhar community to assert their land rights. This effort led to the recognition of their entitlements and ultimately their emancipation from the zamindars. While the control of land by its tillers stirred significant unrest in the region, it also contributed to the rise of the Naxal movement through peaceful agitations. At that time, a significant gap in the quality and accessibility of education motivated Banwasi Vikas Ashram to address educational deficiencies in areas suffering from extremely low literacy rates.
